Intermodal transport or combined transport means linking different transport modes (e.g., truck, rail, ship) within a transport chain. Almost two thirds of the goods in Germany are transported by road. The aim is to strengthen climate-friendly modes of transport, such as rail freight transport or inland-waterways, by combining transport modes and exploiting the monetary and ecological potential for shifting to green-modes. In this field, PTV considers the shift from load carrier-based road freight transport to low-cost and environmentally friendly transport modalities, such as rail or inland waterways. PTV has both professional and technical expertise.
PTV gained much expertise through many years of experience from consulting and IT projects in intermodal transport. PTVs core component is the xIntermodal, a specialized xServer, which combines the competence of road routing with the timetable-based data layer of intermodal networks. The combination of road routing and timetable-based components allows to view and compare classic road routes and intermodal alternatives. Entire transport networks can be planned and optimized by using this function. Besides the algorithms of the xIntermodal for routing and network optimization, intermodal data on infrastructures, services, and operators form a supporting basis. PTV has IT interfaces to timetable information from various operators and correspondingly enriched map material and data maintenance tools. The component is used in various web portals, platforms, TMS systems, or classic desktop applications.
