Alternative Drives

As fossil fuel sources such as crude oil become scarcer and climate change continues, powertrain electrification is a sought-after alternative to conventional combustion engines running on diesel and gasoline. They play a decisive role in the energy transition in transport. Battery-powered cars or hybrid vehicles are now an integral part of the overall range of vehicles. Vehicles with fuel cells, trolleybuses and trucks are being extensively investigated. The Federal Government has committed itself to openness to technology, and we also want to investigate not only the electrification of drive systems, but also whether hydrogen, biodiesel, ethanol, synthetic fuels or natural gas and LPG could be a viable alternative in the future, what effects will result from their use and what infrastructures will be required.

Our fields of action

Against this background, we offer solutions to prepare local authorities, urban and traffic planners, fleet operators and end users for changing requirements. We plan changing developments and optimize routes to achieve the best possible efficiency.

Our product portfolio supports you on this and many other topics.

  • Analysis and prognosis of mobility development, penetration scenarios and emission reduction, among others
  • Planning and design of measures to promote alternative drive systems
  • Fleet management in passenger and freight transport
  • Navigation and route planning with range of coverage prognosis
  • Position planning of charging points, mobility stations etc.

Selected projects

We have been mainly involved in the field of electromobility in passenger and freight transport.

Possible first-time users, so-called early adopters, of electrically powered cars and locations for publicly accessible charging infrastructure in various phases of market penetration were the subject of investigation in the eMERGE and Metropol-E research projects. In the IeMM project PTV developed a concept for an integrated mobility offer of electric vehicle fleets and public transport service providers. This included inter-operator business processes with comprehensive operational management. In addition, a control center was installed for the fleets of a car sharing operator and the public transport provider.

We have developed suitable software tools and assistance systems for the more efficient use of electric vehicles in fleets (fleet management and navigation) and for route planning adapted to the battery drive. Innovative ICT solutions for electrified commercial transport were designed and tested in the iZeus project. The integration of vehicle and fleet data (order data, state of charge, battery management) into a dynamic route planning system was the aim of the IT platform to be developed within the iHub research project. This platform allows logistic service providers to maintain a mixed partially electrified vehicle fleet and to organize it in an user- and customer-friendly manner in everyday operations.
