New levels of details in big models – giving you higher fidelity in less time

Simulation-based assignment with hybrid macro-meso simulation

PTV Visum 2023 allows you to blend mesoscopic and macroscopic assignments in the same model run to better model additional use cases such as effects of incidents, signal control measures, and traffic management changes. It leverages the dynamic perspective and high level of detail provided by simulation-based assignments for critical parts of the mode. At the same time, it saves you the effort of coding the details and calibrating the mesoscopic assignment for the full network.

Use SBA to model at lane level

The mesoscopic simulation-based assignment (SBA) now allows for lane level modeling. This supports new use cases such as dedicated lane usage (including special lanes for HOVs, busses, taxis, or AV), temporary lane blockings (e.g., due to incidents) and temporary lane usage (for example, when shoulders are used as lanes to increase capacity).

Network-wide signal optimization

The new network-wide signal optimization feature allows you to simultaneously optimize local green times and cycles, and signal coordination along corridors. By combining the two methods in one procedure, more data is used to get improved results. Use it to minimize waiting times and queuing vehicles in the network. You can visualize the results in the signal time-space diagram for individual corridors, or further evaluate them with link attributes.

Evaluation of pseudo-dynamics volumes (PDV)

Pseudo-dynamic volumes procedure (PDV) is used to produce hourly traffic volumes from average daily volumes to feed a variety of uses cases. In PTV Visum 2023, the PDV results are in an improved format to power dynamic matrix estimation, generation of subnetworks with demand time series, export of paths via ANM to PTV Vissim, and dynamic flow bundles.

Public transport: Easy process of Check-In/Check-Out Ticketing System Big Data

You can now easily import and process large amounts of data from automated Check-In/Check-Out ticketing systems. This enables you to better understand passenger flows and their trip origins and destinations, as well as the corresponding journey times. The data processing procedures have been significantly sped up as well.

Model bicycle traffic with OSM data

For easier modeling of bicycle traffic, in PTV Visum 2023 you can import bicycle networks from OpenStreetMap (OSM) by using the new configuration Detailed Urban Bicycle Network. The configuration imports all open links for cycling. Characteristics relevant for modeling route choice – such as elevation, road surface, designated bike routes and type of cycling facility - are stored in user-defined attributes.

ABM: Easy integration with ActivitySim

PTV Visum 2023 includes integration with ActivitySim, the popular open-source package for Activity Based demand Modeling (ABM). PTV Visum provides you with all the necessary connecting components for an integrated Visum ActivitySim ABM, such as import for synthetic population, export of skim matrices, running of ActivitySim from within Visum, and reading of results back into PTV Visum’s ABM data structures for assignment and analysis.

ABM: Visualization of trajectories

You can now export trajectories from ABMs stored in PTV Visum to PTV Visum Publisher – our cloud-based data visualization and collaboration tool. This allows you to visualize trips of agents in an ABM model as dots moving in the network. It is also possible to display the number of activities at a given location over time.

Key Highlights of PTV Vissim and PTV Viswalk 2023

Simplicity by design: PTV Vissim and PTV Viswalk 2023 automate processes, minimize sources of errors, and again provide you with even greater visualizations.

Improved handling of speeds through curves

PTV Vissim 2023 takes another step in helping you build models faster and easier. Activate the new network settings attribute "Speed limitation in curves" to automatically set the speed limitations in curves for your network to save time in model development. The "Curve speed function" allows you to define a minimum, average and maximum desired curve speed per vehicle type depending on the radius. Individual vehicles determine their desired curve speed with the same random number that also determines their individual desired speed – i.e., drivers who have a high desired speed are also willing to drive through curves at higher speeds.

Looking good: FBX support for your animated 3D models

PTV Vissim 2023 supports the FBX (Filmbox) format for vehicles, pedestrians, and static 3D models. This format is widely used by 3D applications such as Autodesk or Blender and simplifies the integration of PTV Vissim in 3D modelling workflows. In addition, the FBX format allows for integrated model animations that can be explicitly used and controlled in PTV Vissim. Hence object animations like pedestrians walking or opening an automatic parking barrier become easier than ever before.

Network / Scenario Comparison

With just one click the new function "Compare current network with network file" allows you to compare your currently loaded network with another network. This also works for scenarios or combinations of both. The comparison shows all changes of attributes , as well as added or deleted objects. The differences are displayed in a new view as a tree structure as well as color-coded graphically in the network editor – all transparent and easy to understand and perfectly suited for model audits.

Reverse parking

Car parks can now be modelled even more realistic with vehicles parking forward or reverse (nose-out), or in any combination of both. This is available both for perpendicular and angled parking. For a quick and easy setup, the car park creator generates all required network objects with only a few mouse clicks. Among other parameters the share of vehicles parking in reverse can be set and varied for each drive aisle or even by parking space if required. And the best part of this improvement: The collision prevention of vehicles parking and passing is done automatically – no need to set up conflict areas or priority rules manually.

Assistant for Web Map Services (WMS) configuration

You would like to use your own web map service as background map in PTV Vissim? No problem: We are happy to ease model development with an assistant that allows convenient addition and configuration of user-defined web map services. You no longer need the time-consuming detailed manual specification of an URL.  

Improved duplicating

We improved the duplicate and copy&paste function of link connectors and selections of multiple network objects to speed up model development. And the best part of this improvement: we made it possible to copy connectors even if their start and/or end links are not copied! The new duplicate and copy&paste functionality supports a fast, intuitive, and comfortable behavior.

Lane marking types

In earlier versions, lane markings could only be switched for the entire network. The new “Lane marking types” allow different lane styles and can be assigned individually for each lane. This enables you to model your own markings to clearly separate bus lanes, cycle lanes or hard shoulders on motorways as well as varying dash lengths or omitting markings such as for extra-wide lanes. Even markings with different colors are possible, like in work zones.

Easily switch to meso modeling with “Create Meso Network Nodes”

The new "Create meso network nodes" functionality helps you save time and lets you skip the manually creation of meso network nodes step. This gives you a head start for mesoscopic simulation provided that your network is suitable for a dynamic assignment and that the nodes are "polygon"-types.

Simplicity: New simple fixed-time controller

"Fixed time (simple)" is the first signal control type available in PTV Vissim on Linux platforms and for which changes of signal group attributes of the same signal control can be combined from different modifications in scenario management. Edit signal groups of a signal controller directly in the list of signal groups. In addition, signal group attributes can be changed during the simulation, e.g., by attribute modifications or COM scripts.

Pedestrians in elevators

For each elevator door you can now adjust the pedestrians’ preferred position in the cabin by using the new attribute "Relative distance for dwelling". You can model any position starting with "at the door" to "at the wall opposite to the door". Plus: In contrast to the delay caused by waiting for the elevator in earlier versions, the time in the elevator cabin now is part of the trip and with PTV Vissim 2023 no longer generates delay.

New features for easier and faster traffic analysis and signal optimization

ITE Trip Generation App Integration

You can now instantly connect the ITE TripGen 11th Edition cloud database. As a result, it is possible to save your lookup parameters in PTV Vistro and access or modify your site details later. Plus, review the ITE formatted data plots and land use descriptions, and select the average rate or fitted curve results automatically to your trip generation zones. PTV Vistro 2023 also allows you to continue your trip distribution and assignment analysis with a robust Traffic Impact Analyses workflows and reporting.

Traffic data imports

Add and update your model’s traffic data! Import layout, lanes, phasing, timing plans, and volumes in the Universal Traffic Data Format (UTDF). This means you can integrate signal data from traffic signal controller systems, import data from Econolite Centracs, and import data directly from Miovision tools, plus from many more sources.
