Road traffic accidents present us with enormous challenges worldwide: In 2018, according to the WHO, around 1.35 million people died in accidents and the numbers are rising continuously despite worldwide efforts. For people aged between 5 and 29 years, road traffic accidents are also the most common cause of death worldwide. Fortunately, an opposite trend has been observed in Germany since the 1970s. Here, safety has been significantly improved and the number of people killed in road traffic accidents has been reduced from around 20,000 per year to currently around 3,100. In the coalition agreement, the German government committed itself to the "Vision Zero", a strategy of zero traffic fatalities. To further reduce the number of accident fatalities, measures are to be implemented in the areas of technology, infrastructure and human behavior.
At the same time, however, it must be noted that this positive trend has almost come to a standstill in the past 10 years. With regard to light and severe injuries, a similar development can be observed in Germany over the same period. Against the background of these figures and developments, increased efforts and also new innovative approaches are required at all levels of road safety work worldwide to better protect people from the consequences of road traffic accidents.
