The Caisse des Dépôts Research Institute, Enedis, Paris School of Economics, PTV Group and TIER Mobility announce the creation of the "Urban New Deal" Research Chair

Four partners have joined forces to create a new Chair at Paris School of Economics. The “Urban New Deal” Research Chair aims at developing research to better understand the challenges of tomorrow's low-carbon, resilient and inclusive cities, and proposing an Urban New Deal to implement the ecological and digital transformation.

PTV Group is one of the partners to create a new Chair at Paris School of Economics

The Urban New Deal is based on innovative products and services and on a redesign of urban planning, in order to improve environmental and social impacts, and citizens' quality of life. The arrival of new operators and the digitalization of urban services, on the one hand, change citizens' lifestyle and expectations. On the other hand, it allows new formal and informal relationships between public and private actors, which have to invent new ways in which services are managed, priced, and financed, while investing in sustainable infrastructures and necessary urban developments. The Urban New Deal Chair's researchers use theoretical and empirical approaches in the fields of industrial economics and urban economics in order to:

  • provide decision-making tools to public and private actors in the city for sustainable infrastructures and urban planning policies;
  • study the effectiveness of various tariff and non-tariff measures (nudge, regulation, or taxation) in the mobility and energy sectors, which are identified as the key to cities transition.

“La Caisse des Dépôts' Institute for Research supports research initiatives related to the strategic issues and business lines of the Caisse des Dépôts group, in order to fuel challenges of tomorrow, which will be faced by all territories, with forward-looking thinking. The question of the evolution of cities, and their capacity to adapt to climate change, is at the heart of this research, and also of the missions of Banque des Territoires. Supporting the Urban New Deal Chair of Paris School of Economics is a natural part of our action.”

Isabelle Laudier, Manager Research Institute, La Caisse des Dépôts

“The public electricity distribution network managed by Enedis connects our territories and our cities to the development of electrical uses such as renewable energies, clean mobility and heat pumps. With more and more local renewable energy production, the role of the electricity network and the data it generates are key to imagining the decarbonized and connected city of tomorrow. This is the meaning we wish to give to our contribution to the development of the Urban New Deal Chair of Paris School of Economics.”

Dominique Lagarde, Director of Strategy, Enedis

“Paris School of Economics is delighted to be able to bring together partners who are fully committed to the digital and ecological transition of cities for the well-being of their inhabitants and users. This Research Chair is fully in line with PSE's approach to opening up new spaces for exchange on major societal issues.”

Jean-Olivier Hairault, Director, Paris School of Economics

“Cooperation is key to tackling the climate crisis and creating sustainable, resilient, connected and, most of all, livable urban environments. PTV’s solutions empower cities to shape future-oriented and efficient mobility. We are honored to bring this knowledge into the Urban New Deal Chair.”

Christian U. Haas, CEO, PTV Group

“Since its creation, TIER Mobility, Europe's leading shared micro-mobility provider, wants to change mobility for good, and raise the standards with an innovative and sustainable model. Our participation in the Urban New Deal Chair of Paris School of Economics - along the other partners involved - is one more step in our active commitment to a positive transformation of cities and usage behaviors.”

Pauline Gain, Senior Public Policy Manager France, TIER Mobility

The steering committee brings together the Chair’s holders, Philippe Gagnepain and Carine Staropoli, who are Professors at PSE and The University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, PSE’s Director, Jean-Olivier Hairault, and the representatives of all partners.

Partners are represented by Isabelle Laudier, Manager of the Caisse des Dépôts Research Institute, Dominique Lagarde, Director of Strategy at Enedis, Pierre Mallet, Director R&D Innovation at Enedis, Christian U. Haas, CEO at PTV Group, Pauline Gain, Senior Public Policy Manager (France) at TIER Mobility and Pauline Aymonier, Head of Public Policy (Central) at TIER Mobility.
