Cycling is known for its huge effects on health, road safety and air quality. Thus, in transport models the demand for modelling bicycle traffic grows. This not only refers to the forecasting ability on the demand side, but also includes the assignment of bicycle demand. In the new version of PTV Visum we added a dedicated bicycle assignment method enabling route assignments which better reflect route choices made by cyclists.

I’m a passionate cyclist myself and know of the huge benefits of cycling for health, safety, and air quality.

Also, in transport models the demand for modelling bicycle traffic grows. This not only refers to the forecasting ability on the demand side, but also includes the assignment of bicycle demand.

In the new version of PTV Visum we added a dedicated bicycle assignment method enabling route assignments which better reflect route choices made by cyclists.

And these are the five modelling steps to get bicycle demand assigned to the network:

1. Define characteristics of the network that influence route choice and how they affect the perception of travel time

Examples are the pavement of roads or the type of cycling facility. Cycle roads have a positive effect on the perceived travel time whereas sharing spaces with pedestrians are perceived as an increase.

2. Record the status of the supply for cyclists

3. Populate the factors to network objects that reflect the influence on travel time

4. Adjust the impedance to account for all factors

5. Add the bicycle assignment & run
