Hybrid Macro / Meso assignments in PTV Visum

Presentation Date: 02/15/2024

Presenter: Adam Groves and Chetan Joshi (PTV America)

Regional travel demand models frequently serve as a basis for analyzing wider area impacts in traffic networks. There are often cases where a specific study area needs to be analyzed in greater detail with respect to intersection level interaction of traffic flows, signal timings and corridor management. Such studies are typically for evaluation of short to mid-range impacts. To capture time dynamics, either sub-networks are extracted and used for the study, or the regional model is adapted to the requirements of the project. However, both approaches have shortcomings. Extracted sub-areas may not capture re-routing effects through the broader network and adding lane and intersection geometry and timing detail to entire regional models is cost prohibitive.

The macro-meso hybrid simulation in Visum addresses the shortcomings of the mentioned approaches by combining areas modeled in varying detail in a single assignment method. This enables both a regional view of the network and simulation level detail in a focus area. The modeling effort and runtime are drastically reduced compared to a purely mesoscopic approach. This allows pragmatic and cost-effective application of dynamic traffic assignment at a regional scale.

In this webinar, we will provide an example-based overview of the macro-meso hybrid simulation methodology and cover the basics of network coding and demand setup required to get a hybrid simulation up and running. We will also cover the workflow for evaluating a network scenario and related analysis of outputs, both graphical and tabular.

Emissions calculation with PTV Vissim and Bosch ESTM

Presentation Date: 4/14/2022

Presenter: Jochen Lohmiller (PTV Group), Eric Lindzus (Bosch)

Although air quality in cities has been improving continuously for several years due to more modern vehicles, road traffic is still a major cause of NO2 pollution in cities. Various measures are being taken to improve air quality, e.g. reducing the speed limit, banning vehicles with high emissions, or environmentally friendly traffic control systems, which we will discuss in this webinar in detail. There are various environmentally friendly traffic control measures, e.g. dynamic speed limits, green waves, or a signal control program that minimizes emissions. Proving that a specific signal control program improves air quality is costly but can be validated with local measuring stations and emission measurements on vehicles.
An alternative, which can also be used in the planning process, is the use of a traffic flow simulation linked with an emission model. In this case, the traffic control is mapped in the simulation model, vehicle movements are calibrated with real data, and emissions are calculated from the simulated vehicle movements. The requirements for the calibration of the traffic flow simulation are not only that traffic correlations can be represented in the simulation, but also that vehicles drive realistically with regard to their speeds and accelerations in order to calculate realistic emissions.

Retime: Vissim – a demonstration of a novel way to optimize traffic signals in complex urban networks

Presentation Date: 12/17/2020

Presenter: Alex Stevanovic (Retime, LLC)

Most of the traditional, commercially available, signal timing optimization tools rely on relatively simple, HCM-like, deterministic traffic models that are used to evaluate the quality of proposed signal timings. Such tools are usually quick to deliver optimal solutions but heavily limited in terms of both: 1. Features that can be modeled (usually cannot model multimodal operations, dynamics of actuated signal operations, etc.) and 2. Performance measures that can be used as objective functions in the optimization process. Finally, once such tools complete optimizations, a user is usually ‘left alone’ with a final signal timing plan without ability to comprehensively analyze how such a plan performs: 1. when compared with the other evaluated signal timing plans, and 2. from various multi-objective perspectives. In this webinar, we present and demonstrate a Software-as-a-service (SAAS) platform where Retime, an evolutionary signal optimization program, is coupled with the Vissim, a well-known traffic microsimulation tool that can realistically model a variety of field traffic and signal operations. The platform utilizes the power of cloud-computing to run tens/hundreds of computationally-expensive simulations in parallel. The webinar will concurrently run a presentation and a live demonstration of Retime: Vissim optimization, which will be done on a small urban network. Results from the previous signal optimizations will be used to showcase comprehensive data analytics of evaluated signal timing plans.

Using the Pillar Diagram in Modeling New and Emerging CAV Features

Presentation Date: 10/22/2020

Presenter: Monty Abbas (Virginia Tech)

In this PTV Talks session, Monty Abbas (professor at Virginia Tech) discusses the majority of practitioners use of simulation to assess the benefits of CAVs, they can quickly get overwhelmed with the pace of development of CAV-related features and their representations in simulation tools. Monty presents a newly developed framework (with a focus on the Pillar diagram) that is intended to help practitioners and researchers using simulation to address their specific project requirements. Using this framework, users can evaluate the features of simulation tools and approach how to augment them with programming and scripting when needed. An example of an eco-drive application in PTV Vissim is presented to illustrate the methodology in more detail.

The Oslo Study- Measuring the Impacts of Shared Mobility

Presentation Date: 6/27/2019

Presenter: Paul Speirs (PTV Group)

Paul Spiers discusses how "The Oslo Study" used PTV’s MaaS Modeller to address how MaaS, ridesharing, and autonomous vehicles could impact Oslo. “It’s difficult to plan future infrastructure needs, especially when there is so much uncertainty around future mobility: For instance, will today’s car ownership be the same in the future? Will autonomous vehicles increase our desire to travel more? How quickly will society adopt autonomous vehicles? The PTV MaaS Modeller software allows us to simulate in parallel multiple combinations of assumptions which produce a range of future outcomes. When you understand the range of results and which assumptions have a greater or lesser influence on the outcome, stakeholders can make big decisions with increased confidence. This makes PTV MaaS Modeller software such a strong tool.”
